Security personnel deployed to the Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo district in the Northern Region have withdrawn their services due to alleged government’s inability to feed them properly.
This comes in the wake of Saturday’s interception of a Kumasi/Bunkpurugu bound bus at the Fufulso barrier which was carrying 250 pieces of cartridges meant to fuel the protracted chieftaincy and land disputes in the Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo District.
Reports indicate that the District Assembly was spending little money on feeding the police personnel on local peace keeping mission there.
Apart from that, effecting policing is constrained by scattered settlement of the district. The situation has allegedly made operations extremely difficult for the police personnel.
It was uncovered that the District Assembly had earlier agreed to spend Gh¢ 10 cedis on each of the about 50 policemen on the ground but later varied the figure.
Contacts at the Regional Police Command revealed that the Regional Police Commander, ACP Angwutobge Awuni was out of town but Citi News sources at the Regional Police Command confirmed the report.
The Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo district has since the dismissal of the former DCE Hajia Meiliga Bawa, has had no substantive DCE. The Deputy Northern Regional Minister, Mr. Nasaamu Asabigi is acting in that capacity.
Citi News established contact with Mr. Nasaamu and he denied knowledge of the withdrawal of police service but was quick to say that he will be visiting the district to assess the situation on the ground and make the necessary recommendations.
