A security expert has described as “terribly shocking,” revelation by the Ghana National Fire Service that it is unable to determine the cause of the fire incident that reduced ex-president Rawlings’ residence to ashes. Dr. Kwasi Aning of the Kofi Annan Peace Keeping Training Centre told Joy News the revelation is “most unfortunate and not acceptable.” Ex-president Rawlings had his Ridge residence burnt down on the 14th of February, 2010, sparking huge controversy with some critics accusing the ex-president of torching his own house. Nana Darkwa, a New Patriotic Party sympathizer is in court after he alleged on an Accra radio station that Mr. Rawlings caused the fire in his own house. A committee set up to investigate the cause of the fire released its report on Monday, but expectations that report of the investigations will put an end to the controversy have not been met after it failed to establish the cause of the fire. Mr. Sam Sowah Oblejumah, Head of Public Relations at the GNFS, told Joy FM’s Seth Kwame Boateng the committee after its investigations could not technically pinpoint the cause of the fire, but suspected power fluctuation. But this outcome according to Dr Aning is not good enough. He explained to Evans Mensah on Top Story on Joy FM that the security of the ex-president is so crucial that the cause of the fire must be known so that it will not be repeated. He implored President Mills to reinstitute an investigation to find the possible cause of the fire. Dr Aning was not impressed with the explanation that in some cases it is possible not to know the cause of a fire, chiding, “that excuse is far from acceptable.” In his reaction, Mr Oblejumah, said Aning's criticism is most unfortunate. He said the findings were neither an excuse nor a waste of the tax payer's money. Mr Oblejumah said the wreckage caused by the fire made it rather difficult for causes to be adduced; adding the professional competence of his personnel cannot be questioned. The Aide to former president Rawlings also had an issue with handling of the report of the investigation. Kofi Adams said the Rawlingses were critical in the matter asked justification for denying them a copy of the report. Responding, Mr Oblejuma said the GNFS treated the report in accordance with their chain of command and asked to Rawlingses to apply for a copy if they so wished.
