The Inspector General of Police, Paul Tawiah Quaye, has vowed to make discipline the hallmark of the Ghana Police Service under his administration.
In an exclusive interview with Joy News’ Seth Kwame Boateng, Mr Quaye said he is determined to sweep the Police Service of bad nuts and promised to make the service unattractive to corrupt and unruly persons.
“What we try to do is to put things in the right perspectives and to ensure that the human capacity aspect is well built, so that we all toe the line and work as a team to achieve our aim.”
He said at the beginning of the year, the service came out with a self-regulatory policy directive to “cleanse ourselves, we are going to have image rebuilding programming, and this is what we are doing”.
Mr Quaye said the exercise is aimed at focusing on how to restore public confidence in the service.
“We are policing ourselves, we are making sure that we identify the bad ones amongst us and flush them out. We are trying to do so to give encouragement to members of the public that we would not condone or countenance any act of indiscipline at all in the service…just to have that necessary trust and confidence we need to establish between ourselves and with our operations.”
He, however, said as much as the police service is ready to punish corrupt officers, it also recognizes the need to “give recommendation, commendation and award for good work done.”
He said the service is gradually achieving its aim through the unflinching support of other securities agencies and the civil societies who are able to report misconduct of police personnel.
The Inspector General of Police said personnel who engage in corrupt practices are first interdicted, and made to face service enquiry and criminal investigations, “but the bottom line of it is that we are not shielding anybody at all”.
