Police have picked up one person in connection with the fatal explosion at an abandoned quarry at Paebo last Wednesday.
The blast claimed one life and destroyed buildings. Hundreds of residents were displaced as a result the destruction of their houses.
The abandoned quarry at Nsawam in the Eastern Region was being used to hold large quantities of dynamite.
Joy News sources say the arrested official of AKY Mining Services, owners of the quarry company, was picked up on Friday.
The unnamed official is believed the be the Personal Assistant to the owner of the company.
The owner the company is out of the country, reports say.
Deputy Easter Region Commander ACP James Abass told Joy News’ Joseph Opoku Gakpo the police are currently interrogating the official.
He said police was still doing “crime scene search and crime scene preservation” to get to the bottom of the explosion.
“The outcome of the interrogation will tell us whether he will be charged or he will be a witness,” ACP Abass explained.
Meanwhile, the Commercial Quarry Association says it is working on securing bail for the arrested official.
A member of the association E. Y. Sarpong insists AKY Mining Services cannot be held responsible for the death and injuries.
"The guy is doing genuine business." said Mr Sarpong.
