A Twenty-Seven (27) year former employee of Prudential Bank in Kumasi Richmond Kankam a.k.a Kofi Mensah has been arrested by the Tamale police in attempt to recruit persons for robbery purposes in Kumasi.The suspect who claims he comes from Abuakwa a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti region was arrested with the support of some civilians while making moves in recruiting his applicants.Briefing the media on the arrest, Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer Chief inspector Ebenezer Tetteh disclosed that the suspect arrived in the region during the
early hours of 19th May and checked into Baobab Guest House at Gumani.He was reported to have met one Emmanuel Yaw Agbemovor who is a former employee of the Guest House who helped him check in.Police said he later invited Mr. Agbemovor and asked him to assist him get strong brave men to aid him in carrying out an operation in Kumasi but he resisted.Upon insistence and persistence however, reluctant Yaw later obliged to his new found friend’s request and in turn informed his younger brother about the suspect’s proposal.The younger brother apparently alarmed informed his friend who is a police officer with the name Corporal Prince Apima with the northern regional police command.
The COP feigned interest in joining him and was introduced to the suspect who asked for more recruits for the operation.Early the following morning the COP recruited two civilians and a colleague and they all went to the guest house to meet their employer.Mr. Kankam satisfied with the number took them through some typical rigorous training with some technical terms to be used some of which included “wound” which means kill and “vanish” to mean bury while on operation.He was said to have also taken them through handling of knives and other life threatening gadgets and told them the operation was set to take place at Kumasi 2pm the following day.According to him, their targets were filling stations, Banks and car hijacking including robbing of some prominent rich men in the golden city.After all the drills they checked out of the hotel and headed towards the State Transport Yard in a taxi cab where they were expected to enroute to Kumasi the operational venue.
On the way the COP instructed that the vehicle drive straight to the Sakasaka police station where Richmond Kankam was arrested and placed behind bars.He has however been remanded in police custody by a Tamale District Magistrate Court and would reappear on the 2nd June on charges of preparedness to commit robbery contrary to section 19 and 150 of the criminal offences act.
