An 8 year-old girl is fear dead after she reportedly drowned at Ayigya Zongo in Kumasi on Friday evening after a downpour.
Zainab Nasiru, a primary three pupil fell into a storm drain in an effort to rescue her slippers while playing with her friends.
This is the second incident to be recorded in a week in Kumasi after a 9-year old boy drowned in a similar fashion at Sawaba.
Father of Zainab Mohammed Abdul Nasiru fainted upon hearing news of the disappearance of his daughter.
He was later treated and discharged at the KNUST Hospital.
Zainab was playing with her friends when the incident occured.
A grieving Uncle, Abubakar Siddiq Husein also known as Imam Beriberi was a member of the search party is afraid the incident will affect his brother, Zainab’s father physiologically.
“All of us are frustrated now so all we need is to find the body”. He said.
But it seems residents hope of finding Zainab alive is slimming as rescue efforts continued throughout the night till Saturday morning.
“We have been searching since last night. It has been very difficult because you don’t even know where to search now”, a member of the rescue team has explained.
Assemblyman for Ayigya Zongo Electoral Area, Abdulai Muazu has appealed to the general public to assist with the search.
Meanwhile, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) is supporting rescue efforts with personnel.
