Power Ministry says it is doing all it can to avoid load shedding as a result of setbacks in the provision of gas to some power plants.
A routine inspection of the Atuabo gas plant and issues with gas supplies from the West Africa gas pipeline have resulted in the complete shutdown of the 250 megawatt Ameri plant.
Asogli, on the other hand is currently operating at 15 percent capacity.
The Ghana Grid Company has already warned of possible interruptions to power transmission.
But Deputy Power Minister John Jinapor in an interview with Joy News said inspite of the challenges, everything will be done to avoid power rationing.
“What we intend doing is to first of all, run thermal plants that can run on light crude, today we are discharging additional light crude.
“The challenge is that some of the plants run solely on gas and a clear example is Ameri. We simply have no option than to shut it down because there wouldn’t be gas. But we will look at all the thermal plants and run the scenario and then we will determine how we can manage the situation,” Mr Jinapor said.
He said government is already discharging some light crude and there is more in stock, “so light crude is not a problem.”
He said it was too early to determine if there will be a load shedding or not but “let us remain calm, we will try as much as we can to manage the situation, we are working with the engineers, they will advise us and we will make that available.”
