Government ended last year spending slightly less than projected expenditure target. This was contained in the finance ministry’s fiscal data for 2015.
Government was hoping to spend 37.9 billion Ghana at the end of December 2015, however it ended year ₵630 million short of the projected expenditure.
The marginal improvement can be attributed, to gains made, when it comes to the payment of SSNIT contributions, Total compensation for public sector employers, interest payments and capital expenditure.
The figures shows that, in most cases the state managed to spend below what has been projected in the budget.
A careful look at the data also shows that, government ended last year, paying ₵9 billion as interest on loans, as against ₵6.4 billion on capital expenditure.
On the payment of salaries, which has always been a challenge over the years, government spent ₵300 million more than the ₵10.2 projected.
For many if this performance is a sign of government’s committee to spend within the approved budget going forward, then it might be very good for the economy.
This is because most economists attribute the current challenges facing the country to the huge budget overruns recorded in 2012.
In the past some analyst have also questioned this expenditure numbers, attributing the performance to differed payments, which could which could worsen things, if most of these areas are finally cleared by government.
