Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo has charged lawyers in the country to champion the fight against poverty.
According to him it is responsibility of the today’s lawyers to, like their forebearers, lead the crusade for a better Ghana.
“When you leave this country and travel to Africa and the rest of the world, Ghana is being held up as one country on the continent which is working on modern lines, where individual liberties are respected, where the rule of law is working.”
“We may have our problems but the overall picture that is painted of our nation, is that the contribution of lawyers to fastening the present state of affairs in our country is being well recognized all over,” he said at the launch of the 43rd School of Law week at the University of Ghana.
Akufo-Addo tasked law students and practicing lawyers to project the good image of the country through their deeds.
He believes that although there already is good name of the lawyers on the continent, a lot more can be done if more is to be achieved.
The constitution that we have is in itself a document that is heavily influenced by the thinking of the lawyers that have gone before, he said, adding, “so that is the heritage that you have and it is the heritage that should allow you to stand on your feet and fight for that even greater Ghana that is ahead of us”.
He stressed that “The fight today is how to bring prosperity to the mass of our people and you are going to play a very important role in that struggle and I am confident, that like the ones of old, you are also going to rise up to the occasion.”
