Despite great confidence he will secure endorsement, the President’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive for Ejisu Juaben, Afrifa Yamoah Ponkoh has been rejected for the second time.
Yamoah Ponkoh, a controversial figure in the Assembly was first rejected in December 2015 and had two more chances left to secure confirmation from the members of the assembly, according to Local Government law.
The second meeting to decide his fate last week was postponed to April 12, 2016 after Assembly members raised technical issues with the process.
The meeting eventually came off Tuesday where the nominee exhausted one of the two chances he had left. Like the previous meeting, the second round of voting was held under tight security.
Luv FM's Erastus Asare Donkor who monitored the process reported that Mr. Yamoah Ponkoh polled 38 votes out of a total of 68 valid votes cast.
He needed 46 votes to secure the endorsement but he fell short by eight votes, leaving him frustrated and accusing the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), for his predicament.
The Assembly has 10 days to meet for the third time for one final round of voting to seal the politician's fate.
A bitter and disappointed Yamoah Ponkoh is considering aborting the process. He told Joy News he may request the president to revoke his nomination.
But even before the first vote last December, residents vowed to reject him.Protests heralded the announcement of the nomination of Yamoah Ponkoh.
The extent of his unpopularity became evident when the NDC leadership in the area threatened to make the area ungovernable if he sails through and invoked curses to buttress their position.
True to their promise, Yamoah Ponkoh obtained only 25 out of 66 votes. He was rejected by 41 Assembly Members who voted ‘No’.
But sounding defiant, Yamoah Ponkoh told Joy News a comeback victory in the second round is imminent. “There is no way I am going to retreat on this. I am going to claim decisive victory” he vowed
