Bayern Munich drew 2-2 with Benfica to edge into the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Bayern went into the second leg at the Estadio da Luz knowing that they were in control of the tie after denying Benfica an away goal in the first leg, but were stunned when Raul Jimenez scored with Benfica’s first meaningful attack in the 27th minute.
The famously passionate home crowd roared on their side to look for a second and turn the tie on its head, but were silenced when Phillip Lahm’s pull-back found its way to Arturo Vidal on the edge of the box, who leathered the ball in.
Thomas Muller added another from a corner after the break to put Bayern in the driving seat, with Benfica needing three goals in the final half an hour to escape elimination from the competition.
But there was still time for Anderson Talisca to set up a tense finish with a superb free-kick strike 15 minutes from the end – and feat that he almost repeated with another set-piece effort a short time later.
Bayern held on relatively comfortably for the draw on the night and the 3-2 win on aggregate, and will now face one of Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid or Pep Guardiola’s next side Manchester City in the semi-finals.
