Communications Director of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Solomon Nkansah is angry over what he says are empty promises by flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his running mate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to improve the living conditions of farmers if they get the nod in November 7 elections.
According to Mr Nkansah, Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia do not have the relevant experience in farming to enable them deliver on their promise to farmers.
He says because President John Mahama’s father once was a farmer, he appreciates efforts by farmers and hence stands a better a chance at improving farmers’ conditions.
“How can Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Bawumia who has not farmed before improve the lives of farmers” Solomon Nkansah asked.
Solomon Nkansah was speaking Monday with Afia Pokua on Adom FM’s current affairs programme “Burning Issues” on the development of the Western Region under the leadership President Mahama.
“Has Akufo-Addo or Bawumia visited the farm or weeded in farm before like President Mahama” Solomon Nkansah inquired.
His comment follows an assurance by Nana Akufo-Addo that he will revive Ghana’s declining agricultural sector under his government if voted into power in 2017.
Addressing farmers at Sampa in the Brong Ahafo Region Nana Akufo-Addo said if the country is to make any meaningful change in the lives of the people, “our efforts must be directed at this sector. The majority of people can only feel a change in their lives when we develop agriculture.”
Akufo-Addo said in 2008, the NPP grew agriculture by 7.4% but the sector has shrunk to 0.04% in 2015 under President Mahama.
But Solomon Nkansah said Akufo-Addo and the NPP do not have anything good to offer farmers in the country.
On the same show NPP MP for Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai, Kingsley Aboagye Gyedu said agric sector and cocoa production, under ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor increased considerably due to his good policies and good governance but under the eight years of the late Mills and Mahama led administration, the sector has shrunk due to mismanagement of the industry.
He added that NPP have a track record to better manage the sector and improve the lives of farmers, but not the NDC government which is only collapsing the sector.
