The Northern Regional Minister, Moses Mabengba, has expressed concern about the gradual increase of HIV/AIDS in the region.
The region recorded a prevalence rate of 2.0 percent in 2009, up from 1.1 percent in 2008, representing a 0.9 increase over 12 months.
Addressing a workshop on HIV/AIDS in the regional capital, Tamale, Mr Magbenba blamed the sharp rise on stigmatization and discrimination against persons living with the disease.
He said once people are discriminated against, they are forced to keep their status to themselves, and in the process infest others.
The Regional Minister called for a programme where prominent members of society will publicly test for the disease to encourage others to find out their status.
The Regional Focal Person for HIV, Nuhu Musah, said the aim of the workshop was to bring stakeholders together to review HIV/AIDs responses, address challenges, share ideas and chart path towards dealing with the disease.
