A 39-year-old woman appeared before the Tuobodom District Magistrate's Court for allegedly issuing fake insurance stickers to drivers in Techiman in the Brong Ahafo Region.
Matilda Adjei was arrested by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) officers in Techiman after some drivers disclosed she sold to them the fake stickers.
Despite several cautions to the public over the purchasing of stickers from road-side vendors, many drivers and vehicle owners continue to fall victims.
Some drivers who were arrested with the fake stickers revealed to the police that Matilda Adjei has been issuing them with the fake stickers at a price lower than the price of the original stickers.
According to the drivers, Matilda who worked for the NSIA Insurance Company in Techiman informs drivers and vehicle owners who visit the company about the alternative way to obtain stickers and convinces them it is affordable.
She duplicates original stickers and sells them to the drivers and vehicle owners who agree to purchase the cheap stickers.
Matilda pleaded guilty to the crime in court on Tuesday, May 17, but said she had an explanation. The court, presided over by Abdul Baki Abdullai adjourned the case to the 24th of May 2016.
