Vain promises have contributed to the downfall of formidable political parties since Ghana’s independence.
This was stated by the 1994 Second National Best Farmer and Chief of Awutu-Mankessim, Nai Kwao Otuo V, at a meeting of some Central Regional Executives of the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) with farmers at Awutu-Panim.
He warned politicians against making promises they could not fulfil when given the mandate during political campaigns and advised aspiring Presidential and Parliamentary candidates to refrain from the practice.
Nai Otuo who is also a member of the Awutu Traditional Council pointed out that it was better for candidates to tell the electorate the truth, adding that, party politics in the country had come of age with the electorate fed up with unfulfilled promises.
If politicians win their seats based on facts, Ghanaians would not be unduly worried with problems during their tenure of office since it would enable the electorate to take informed decisions.
In another development Nai Otuo has advised farmers, palm wine tapers and smokers on the need to handle fire properly during the current dry season to avoid bushfires.
He was addressing settler farmers working on land he had released to them within the Awutu-Effutu-Senya and Agona Districts for the cultivation of cocoa and food crops at Bowohomodzen near Agona Duakwa at the weekend.
Nai Otuo reminded them that indiscriminate setting of fire could damage their farms, affect the environment and the rainfall pattern, which would have an adverse effect on the water level of the Volta Lake and affect the regular supply of electricity in the country.
