Severe flooding has claimed one life and many others are feared dead in Akosombo in the Asuogyaman district of the Eastern region, NADMO Coordinator for Akosombo, has disclosed.

According to Luv Joy Dusi, dozens suffered varying degrees of injuries after the buildings submerged in the life-threatening occurrence.

This follows torrential rains Monday, May 23, which the residents say is the worst flooding there in years. Residents say they will be compelled to sleep in the open since their rooms are still flooded.

There are fears some residents may have lost their lives as several houses and buildings were submerged following flooding there yesterday.

Pupils of some two schools, the Akosombo Presby Primary, and Akosombo International Primary School, were stuck in their classrooms because of the rain.

Mr. Dusi told Joy News, “The students could not move out because the first floor was submerged and we had to move them to the second floor.”

Joy News' Kwetey Nartey who visited the New Quarters and Abamsuro Quarters said every block was flooded.

He reports that there was mud everywhere obvious left in the wake of the flood which every resident complained affected them. 

"You would struggle to make yourself out of many of the Quarters, " he told news anchor Francis Abban during the Joy FM Midday News 

The residents of New Quarters and Abamsuro Quarters hardly had a wink Monday as they struggled to save some of their belonging which was caught in the rains in order to cut their losses. 

One nursing mother said she had to sleep on a wet mattress with her baby on her chest as the whole house was flooded. Other parents had to stand and carry their children or place them on higher table or wardrobes as the water was at their knee level.    

Mr. Dusi said NADMO will sit down with the Volta River Authority (VRA) to find a way to address the perennial at these communities.   

There has been a renewed debate at the onset of yet another raining season about the architectural design of the buildings across the country as rains leave most areas flooded.

Whilst many have criticised the manner in which building permits are given to building contractors and individuals to put up structures, others believe the lack of political will to demolish structures especially those built on waterways by government is responsible for the recent state of the country.

Meanwhile, President of the Contractors Association, Martins Nnuro said the construction of drainage system in the past was not done properly which is the resultant effect of the current challenges the nation is facing with flooding.

This, Mr Nnuro believed could be addressed if the government will build a new, bigger and better storm drains to prevent disastrous floods.

He cautioned residents in flood-prone areas in Accra to brace up for more floods in the coming days.

In a related development, government has disclosed its slums redevelopment plan is on course with special emphasis on the Ashaiman and Nima areas.

The Deputy Minister of Water Resource, Works, and Housing, Samson Ahi said special attention would be given to individuals living on the streets when the project completed.
