An appeal has been made to school authorities and parents to be very careful when administering caning. This is to prevent the cane from coming into contact with the children's eyes and resulting in a possible loss of the eyes.Speaking with the Times in Accra, an eye Surgeon at the Emmanuel Eye Clinic, Dr. Michael Ekuoba-Gyasi, said there have been situations when canes being used to cane a child peeled off and in the process hurt the child's eyes.He said that there have also been instances when children standing by were the victims and in some of those incidents has led to the loss of sight.Dr. Ekuoba-Gyasi said often the clinic receives patients with such cases and thus his appeal to parents and school authorities to save the sight of innocent children. He said that he was aware that even though corporal punishment is not being encouraged some parents and school authorities still practice it thus the need to caution the public so that in the process of "correcting" the children harm is not caused. The eye surgeon advised that if children should be caned for whatever reason, the ideal thing to do is to ensure that other children stay yards away."If a child is being caned the one doing the canning should ensure that he or she doesn't hit the child's eyes."He also appealed to parents to practice the use of dialogue for children to understand their mistakes instead of canning them whenever they go wrong.Source: The Ghanaian Times
