Authorities at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology have justified a recent directive for students to stop holding political meetings until further notice. Hall administrators who issued the directive, say it was to maintain sanity on the campus and avert future conflicts between rival political groups. The directive comes after press conferences and counter press conferences by the students’ wings of the NDC and the NPP on the university teachers’ strike action. The university is hoping the decision to freeze all political activities temporarily will reduce the political tension on the campus. The Public Relations Officer of KNUST, Solomon Pamford, said while the directive may appear to unjustifiably curtail the political rights of the students, restraining students temporarily from engaging in activities with the potential to destabilize the campus was only reasonable. He said the university authorities did not think it prudent to wait to till the situation degenerates before taking action. Source: Joy News/Ghana
