Lecturers at the University of Ghana have refused to return to the classroom despite a directive from the University authorities to do so.The directive issued Tuesday implored the lectures to end their two weeks-long strike and return to the classroom.The UTAG branch of the University of Ghana had early on in the day announced the suspension of the strike but would still not return to the classroom until the National Executives of UTAG take a final decision on the matter.Stella Amoah acting Director of Public Affairs of the University of Ghana told Joy News’ Dzifah Bampoh the directive is in consonance with the decision by UTAG (Legon) to suspend their strike.She explained the directive is only an appeal for the lecturers to resume work on Wednesday to prevent further loss of teaching time.But the secretary to the Legon Branch of UTAG says the university’s directive cannot be adhered to.Dr Walter Affo told Joy FM: “We are not returning to the classroom tomorrow. Even though UTAG Legon voted to suspend the strike action, UTAG Legon cannot take a unilateral decision. It has to be a collective decision from all the other campuses.He said a final decision will be made by the National Executive Committee of UTAG, saying it will be unconstitutional for UTAG Legon to unilaterally return to the classroom.The decision to embark on the strike was taken by seven out of eight campuses and there has to be a unanimous decision to end the strike, he said.Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
