A Kumasi-based care specialist is advocating laws to promote the well-being of the aged in society.
Executive Director of Guardians of Gray Masters Foundation acknowledges successive governments have tried a short-term solution to elderly people.
Abigail Miezah, however, says long-term solutions are what the country needs.
She says increasing sexual abuse, especially, of elderly women and persistent attack on aged persons accused of witchcraft can correct only with appropriate laws.
Mrs. Miezah wants government to act urgently and decisively on the matter, adding the time is ripe for government to act.
“The time is now. We have to act very fast. It is true there is no clear-cut law for the aged but we should have one for the aged,” Mrs Miezah insisted.
Guardians of Gray Masters Foundation as part of its long-term plans intend to establish a recreational center for the aged in the Ashanti region to cater for the needs of elderly.
The United Nations has set June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day to focus global attention on physical, emotional and financial abuse of the elderly.
It also seeks to understand the challenges and opportunities presented by an ageing population.
The day will also bring together state and private actors to exchange ideas on how best to reduce violence against the elderly.
Guardians of Gray Masters Foundation will mark the day with a procession through the principal streets of Kumasi to draw residents attention to the need to promote and live in harmony and promote the well-being of the elderly.
Mrs. Meizah says abuse against the elderly, especially, for witchcraft must stop.
“It’s very serious where our grandmothers are being forced into sexual acts. Witchcraft is now associated with old age because their skin is wrinkled, they don’t look that beautiful. Witchcraft being associated with the elderly especially women; I think we should do something about it," she said.
