A fellow at policy thinktank, Imani Ghana wants managers of the economy to give more support to the services sector because of its potential to turn around the fortunes of the economy.
Kofi Bentil said even with the little support it is receiving, the sector has been found to be the largest contributor to national income.
According to the recent rebased figures from the Ghana Statistical Service, the sector is responsible for about half of Ghana’s GDP, displacing Agriculture to second place.
He told Joy Business that services could be the answer to the country’s development challenges.
“We should focus on removing the roadblocks on the way [of the services sector] to help them to grow faster and to grow bigger and we should attract more people into that area.”
Mr Bentil expressed regret at the neglect of the tourism sector.
He emphasized the need for the sector to be properly developed.
He conceded that the government alone cannot do it but added it must create the atmosphere for the private sector to flourish.
He however said the other sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing should not be neglected.
