Tertiary institutions in the country account for 34 percent of the volume of transactions on e-zwich Automated Teller Machines. That is according to new statistics released by the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement System (GhIPSS).The figures also show the campuses account for 25% of the value of transactions on the ATMs across the country.The e-zwich ATMs are currently installed on four campuses; the University of Ghana, the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS), the University of Cape Coast and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).Over the past month, the KNUST recorded the highest level of activity with close to 1, 200 transactions whilst IPS recorded the highest value of close to 26,000 Ghana cedis.The e-zwich ATMs are used largely to load funds on the electronic payment cards and to receive money transferred to them.Officials of GhIPSS are impressed with the level of activity on the campuses.General Manager in charge of Project and Business Development, Archie Hesse says other tertiary campuses will soon have the ATMs to benefit from the biometric smart card.He commended the banks for their role in the deployment of the e-zwich ATMs, stating that “GhIPSS is aware of the fact that the use of the electronic card implies a fundamental change and it is therefore adopting the best strategy with sufficient patience to ensure high patronage of the payment system”.Story by Kofi Adu Domfeh
