A senior research fellow at the Legon Centre for International Affairs at the University of Ghana, Dr. Vladimir Antwi Danso has pointed accusing fingers at the media for polarizing the country.
Dr. Antwi Danso who was speaking at a ‘plain talk’ forum organized by the National Media Commission for civic education Thursday said the media have shirked their core responsibilities of shaping public opinion and are spending time and space dabbling in what he describes as “media terrorism.”
But Dr. Antwi Danso warns that if this phenomenon is not nipped in the bud, it could create chaos in the country.
He explained that the situation is gradually getting out of hands, adding “the implications are that we lose the essence of the social compact. When we lose the essence of the social compact, everybody does what he wants. Democracy is deterred and democracy hiccups badly…You may think that we have a vibrant media but a media that is giving us the wrong direction, so we are moving in a very wrong direction".
Dr. Antwi Danso pointed out that the possibility of chaos emanating from the indiscipline that we have in the society could derail the democratic progress the country has made.
He advised the media to redirect their focus and perform their function as the custodian of the constitution rather than becoming a platform for fomenting trouble.
“We want to see from the media as the custodian of our future, the shape of our future. So I am expecting (of) the media to be more proactive, to be more focused, to be more reoriented towards Ghana and not towards political parties,” he sermonized.
