The National Identification Authority has initiated moves to raise funds for its activities.
The authority was established in 2003 to compile a national register and issue ID cards.
But the authority is yet to issue the ID cards because of delays in the release of funds.
The NIA has however now procured equipment to produce the ID cards which it hopes to start distributing in January.
Executive Secretary Dr. William Ahadzie told Joy News the authority must be weaned from relying on government.
“We have commissioned a business plan which establishes the viability of the Authiorty as an entity and we are in discussions with the Ministry of Finance about the possibility of the ministry underwriting some credit facilities for us from any of the banking institutions,” he said.
Dr. Ahadzie said the NIA has also designed an online system for those who have not been captured in their database to register for their cards.
