The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Advisor, Madam Akua Dua, has called on celebrities to join hands with United Nations Volunteers to accelerate the progress toward achieving the MDGs.She explained that since the populace easily identified with lyrics in music, it would be necessary that celebrities, especially musicians, compose songs that are aimed toward the sensitization of society on what role each person has to play to ensure that Ghana achieves the eight-point anti-poverty MDGs by the 2015 target deadline.Madam Dua made the call - which comes ahead of the celebration of this year’s International Volunteers’ Day on Saturday 4th December, 2010 - when she schooled some celebrities on the current status of the MDGs in Ghana during a briefing session on the MDGs at the UN Compound in Accra on Wednesday. The celebrities will serve as UN Volunters or ambassadors of peace and they include Kojo Antwi, Sarkodie, Praye, Lynx Entertainment, Jay Ghartey, Wutah, Kobby, Trigmatic, Reggie Zippy, Ruff and Smooth, Guru, Sugar Ranking, Copper Slino, Iwan and Eboo.An exhibition to raise awareness about the MDGs and showcase some of the contributions and achievements of UN Volunteers in Ghana will highlight this year’s celebration. It would take place at the Ghana International Press Centre in Accra beginning at 9:30am. The exhibition will share success stories and appreciate the indispensable role volunteers play in these efforts.UN Volunteers will be joined by volunteers from JICA, France Volunteers, VSO, VOLU, COVOC, and Peace Corps.“Our goal with this exhibition is to support the people and government of Ghana and the UN Country Team to share their success stories,” said UNV Programme Officer, Hiroko Kodaka. She added that “we are grateful to the Celebrity Ambassadors and our partners for uniting with UN Volunteers to raise awareness and celebrate the role volunteers play in development.”She was hopeful to use these icons for next year’s International Year of Volunteers ( IYV+10).
