UBS AG clearly feels the need to buff up its image.
The giant Swiss bank, which was hammered during the financial crisis, is testing at five of its branches a dress code that goes well beyond the norm. All 43 pages of it.
As The Wall Street Journal reports, the code is similar to that at boarding schools, and could be expanded to all its Swiss branches. The move, according to Reuters, is part of broader initiative to bolster the bank's public image in its home country, which bailed it out.
Beyond the basics, the code advises not eating food with tell-tale signs, like garlic and onions. Tobacco breath isn't advised either.
Socks that run up to the knee are also good, so skin isn't bared when legs are crossed.
According to translations of the document, short skirts are out - middle of the knee is best. Light makeup is good. Underwear on women should not be too tight, and they carry a spare pair of pantyhose.
Bracelets and earrings are a no-no for men, but watches are good. Men are advised not to dye their hair because it doesn't match the age of the skin. Dark grey, black or navy suits are good.
For both men and women, underwear shouldn't be visible. And for men, a translated version advises, "your underwear should be functional, and shouldn't be visible through your clothes, nor should anyone be able to guess what's under them."
A spokesman said the rules, aimed at portraying a good image with customers, are meant as recommendations.
