The Upper East Regional Director of the Museums and Monuments Board, Mr. Richard Boateng has commended the Government of France for helping to preserve Ghanaian culture through its Embassy in Accra.
The Director made the remark during a photo exhibition mounted by the French Embassy depicting the activities and events undertaken by Ghanaian heroes as part of Ghana's 50th Anniversary celebration.
Mr. Boateng explained that the essence of the exhibition, which had already taken place in some parts of the country, was to showcase the country's rich cultural heritage after 50 years and urged the youth to show more interest in Ghana's cultural heritage.
He said it was rather unfortunate that majority of Ghanaians did not value their cultural heritage and allowed themselves to be influenced by foreign culture, and noted that posterity would judge Ghanaians if nothing was done about it.
He attributed the situation to the love of Ghanaians for foreign cultures to the detriment of their own cultural heritage.
Mr. Boateng also mentioned the lack of logistics, including transportation and cameras as some of the challenges confronting the board in the discharge of its duties.
"As a country, we need to know where we come from and where we are going," he stressed and appealed to Government and other stakeholders to come to the aid of the Board by providing it with the necessary logistics to facilitate its work.
An official from the Board, Mr Abubakar Musah Ibrahim, called on Ghanaians to cultivate the habit of documenting events and activities in their communities through photography since it was the best way of preserving their culture.
He stressed the need to whip up the interest of school children in cultural activities.Source: GNA
