The Weija-Kasoa road has recorded its 10th accident in three weeks. The latest accident injuring about 17 people occurred on Sunday morning. The accident involving one mini bus and two cargo trucks occurred at the GICEL traffic lights at about 6 am. All the vehicles were traveling in the Accra-bound lane. The Assemblywoman of the Bortianor Electoral Area, Madam Vera Boamah whose house is right at the traffic light where the accident occurred told Joy News it is the 10th in three weeks.“I heard a loud bang. The vehicles were coming in tough speed from Kasoa so I run to the police station and the Fire Service to inform them...with their help we were able to remove the passengers.”The about 17 passengers believed to be involved in the accident have been sent to the three major hospitals in the capital, the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Ridge and 37 Military Hospitals.Joy News later caught up with one of the victims, Mr Stephen Appiah, who was trapped in the front seat of the mini bus. He said it is his 36th birthday today and was traveling to Accra from Saltpond to attend a relative's funeral.“We noticed from the driving mirror that the truck was approaching at top speed. Even though he attempted to move on to the traffic light it was too late. I had to endure several agonizing moments while rescuers try to free me from the wreckage. I have really suffered.”
Doctors said Appiah might be discharged on Monday. The Assemblywoman of the area said several requests to authorities to intervene to curb the high accident rate on the road have proved futile. Most of the accident victims were treated and discharged with minor injuries. A few others are however said to be in critical conditions at the Ridge and 37 Military Hospitals.
