The Students’ In Free Enterprise (SIFE) at the KNUST have ventured into exotic vegetable cultivation, as part of a project to develop the interest of the youth in agriculture.The collegiate organization has been providing training for its members and equipping them with skills in leadership and entrepreneurship through community development programmes.Nelson Owusu Ansah, President of SIFE-KNUST, told Luv FM the group is also building the capacity of the youth in local communities to imbibe the principles of agriculture commercialization for wealth creation.After a successful pilot project in the Sekyere Afram Plains of Ashanti, the group has secured a large stretch of land to go into large-scale vegetable production.“We are hoping to use this land effectively to produce enough vegetables which can be supplied throughout the year and we are hoping that with the necessary structures that we are putting in place, this project will go a long to help the youth in the communities in getting out of poverty”, Mr. Owusu Ansah stated.He added the project also supports local farmers to market their produce, observing that “for far too long farmers in this country have been ripped off of their profit by market women and other bodies. It’s high time all that give way to something new and we think that SIFE can play a fore role in terms of reviving and building the interest of the youth in agriculture”.Meanwhile, the Agricultural Development Bank is supporting the SIFE agric project with Gh¢1,500.00.Marketing Manager, Lord Koramoah says the bank will increase the support once the project kicks off as well as offer attachment opportunities for students interested in agric financing.Story by Kofi Adu Domfeh/Luv FM/Ghana
