Three armed robbers who robbed passengers of various sums of money on the Koforidua-Adukrom road were yesterday sentenced to 40 years' imprisonment each with hard labour by the Koforidua High Court. Tetteh Martey, 28, Alex Dawu, 30, and Isaac Tetteh Yawo, 32, were part of a five-member gang of armed robbers who used pistols and machetes to attack passengers on board a number of vehicles at the Adukrom Cemetery on April 16, 2010. The three who were charged with robbery and pleaded not guilty, were said to have mounted a roadblock and robbed the passengers of their money, totalling GH¢2,224 and six mobile phones valued at GH¢53O. A State Attorney, Mr Fred Tetteh, told the court that at about 3 a.m. on April 16, 2010, a number of passengers on board a Benz bus, with registration number GT 8021 E, and a Nissan Urvan, with registration number ER 938 Z, lodged a complaint at the Adukrom Police Station that they had been robbed of their belongings by five armed robbers. He told the court, presided over by Mr Justice G.S. Suurbaareh, that when the passengers on the vehicles plying the Koforidua-Adukrom road reached a section of the road at the Adukrom Cemetery, five armed robbers, holding pistols and machetes, attacked them and robbed them of their money and other valuables. Later in the same day, however, Tetteh Martey, a trader, was arrested at the Adukrom Lorry Station by one of his victims, after which Martey led the police to effect the arrest of Dawu and Yawo, both masons, from their hideout at Somanya and Koforidua, respectively. Handing down the sentence, Mr Justice Suurbaareh said it should be enough to deter others from such negative attitude. Source: Daily Graphic
