The Ghana Standards Board has cleared cement manufacturing company Fortress Investors Limited of distributing sub-standard cement to the public.
The board had initially said Global Premium cement was unsuitable for use because of its sub-standard quality. But public relations officer of the Ghana Standards Board Kofi Amponsah Bediako says the product was wrongfully labeled and therefore tested with a wrong standard.
“They came in with Portland limestone cement and that was tested according to a certain standard. What happened recently was also a type of Portland Cement that was also tested against a different standard, because they labeled the first one Portland Cement and so the standards on that was what was used. But when they came here yesterday [Thursday], it became clear that they should have labeled it Portland Limestone Cement,” he explained.
Mr. Bediako said the company has been asked to go and correct the anomaly, adding “we are still waiting for them so that when they correct it they can deal in that product."
The Ghana Standards Board also cleared GCNet of any complicity and indicated that the company is not likely to face any sanctions as it could be as a result of the regular problems manufacturing companies face.
