Ghana winger Andre Ayew snatched a late goal as Marseille came from behind to beat Nancy 2-1 on Sunday night and move to within a point of the Ligue 1 summit.
The champions continued their strong recent form, notching a fourth straight league win, come as it did after their midweek stalemate with Manchester United in the Champions League.
Nancy took a 34th-minute lead through Julien Feret’s outstanding solo effort, but Marseille equalised through Ayew on the stroke of half-time before the Ghanaian winger grabbed a second four minutes from time.
The game was slow to get going, and it was the hosts who enjoyed the only clear chance of the opening half an hour, but Steve Mandanda made a fine save to keep out Joel Sami’s goalbound header.
They led in the 34th minute when Feret picked up the ball on the left wing, cutting inside and beating Charles Kabore before firing home.
However, Marseille got level just before the break when Nancy failed to deal with a corner. Lucho Gonzalez saw his shot blocked, but Ayew was on hand to finish from the rebound.
Marama Vahirau launched an ambitious 30-yard effort early in the second half, but it was comfortable for Mandanda.
It was end-to-end for a spell, with Ayew firing just wide of the target before, at the other end, an error from Souleymane Diawara let Samba Diakite through on goal, but Taye Taiwo made an excellent recovery to clear off the line after Diakite had beaten the goalkeeper.
Just as it appeared headed for a draw, Taiwo broke down the left and beat two men only to see his shot blocked by Damien Gregorini.
But it once again fell perfectly for the predatory Ayew to slot home and snatch the points.
