Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Zabzugu/Tatale have condemned an alleged attack on the Member of Parliament (MP) Mr John Jabbah Bennam, by a group believed to belong to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr Ahamed Iddi Adakwa, Communication Officer of the NPP in the constituency who condemned the alleged attack in a press conference in Tamale on Monday called on politicians in the area to rise above pettiness, political vendetta and seek ways of promoting development.
He said attacks on members of opposing political parties were unnecessary and recipe for chaos.
Mr Adakwa explained that Mr Bennam was travelling accompanied by two buses meant for the Zabzugu and the Tatale Senior High Schools when he was attacked.
He said the MP's vehicle was vandalised, describing it as "barbaric".
Mr Adakwa called on the police to investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to book to calm tempers.
He said if nothing was done about the situation, it would give people room to take the law into their own hands at the least provocation.
"We (NPP) as a political party coming from a tradition that extols the rule of law condemn this act and we believe others who think alike would do the same."
Mr Adakwa said the NPP was committed to building a harmonious democratic environment with the rule of law as a catalyst.
Alhaji Umar Issifu Alhassan, Northern Regional Secretary of the NDC who was contacted by the Ghana News Agency confirmed the incident, and said it was a reaction to a provocative act by the MP.
He alleged that the MP who accompanied the buses presented to the two schools in the area by Vice President John Mahama said he bought them through his share of the MP's District Assemblies' Common Fund.
Alhaji Alhassan said the police intervened to save the situation.
