Angry teachers in the Brong Ahafo Region have indefinitely laid down their tools and made demands of the education directorate in the region.
In a petition sent to the directorate on Wednesday the teachers are demanding an immediate review of the Single Spine Salary Structure(S SSS) which appears to have caused a lot more pain than joy.
Teachers, like many other public servants, had high expectations of an improved salary structure under the new pay policy, but their hopes appeared to have been dashed after they saw their February salaries paid under SSSS.
They claim their salaries had either been reduced drastically or were exactly the same as it was before the implementation of the policy.
There have been widespread agitations with the teachers in the Brong Ahafo Region embarking on an indefinite strike.
In a petition sent to the Brong Ahafo Education Directorate on Wednesday, the teachers, among other things, condemned what they claim are delays in payment of their salaries.
They have also called for the reviews of the SSSS to resolve alleged distortions.
Confirming the details of the petition to Joy News the Public Relations Officer of the Education Directorate, Komla Abotsi said the teachers in Techiman have informed them that they will not take part in the upcoming 6 March celebrations.
They have also called for the mass resignation of the leadership of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) who they accuse of not championing the interest of teachers.
But the Deputy Education Minister Mahama Ayariga has appealed for calm as the ministry takes steps to resolve the matter.
The Education Ministry as well as the Employment Ministry were locked up in an urgent meeting with leaders of GNAT and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) on Wednesday to find an amicable solution to the problem.
Mahama Ayariga noted the leaders of the two ministries are liaising with officials of the Fair Wages Commission and dialoguing with the leadership of GNAT and NAGRAT in order to ensure a peaceful resolution of the grievances.
