The Executive Director of the policy think-tank IMANI Ghana, Franklin Cudjoe has said Ghana does not need a visionary leader but rather effective leadership to develop the nation.
“We don’t need any vision; we already know the problems just work at it, people should just work it. We should call on the leadership currently to work at it. It's just like President Mills saying this year is an action year; in actual fact, well we need to see him walk the talk”.
According to him, Ghanaians are masters of their own and do not need new idealism and dreams.
Commenting on Nana Akufo-Addo’s vision to transform the country in 10 years on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Mr. Cudjoe stated even though Nana Addo's call is a legitimate one, he needs to start working at his plans by coming out with measurable targets in order to achieve his vision.
He added that the NPP flag bearer has opened up an important debate but he (Nana Addo) did not clearly define how he intends to transform the country which is now a middle income one.
Franklin Cudjoe stated that there is the need for political party leaders to have a quantifiable milestone to guide them in implementing their programmes.
“If you have a plan to transform an economy, then you should have a measurable milestone,” he maintained.
The IMANI boss noted that, Ghana does not need to borrow from Brazil or any other country to transform the economy but rather a proper decentralization of power and resources must be put in place “because development comes from below and not above”.
He said if government is able to plug all the loop holes in the tax system and correct the anomalies in the pay roll system of the various government institutions, the economy would be transformed.
Mr. Cudjoe observed that even though political leaders have visions just like any other Ghanaian, he believes Nana Addo's statement is 50 percent political.
The flagbearer of the New Pateriotic Party(NPP)Nana Akufo-Addo on March 9, 2011 at a workshop organized for NPP researchers from the ten regions revealed that the party is preparing a comprehensive programme of industrialization and modernization that can transform Ghana’s economy in a matter of a decade.
