The Convention Peoples’ Party (CPP) has rubbished claims by the two main political parties – National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) – to transform Ghana’s economy in a matter of six and ten years respectively.
According to the CPP, the two parties have done the country a great disservice after a total of 30-years of rulership.
NPP Flagbearer Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said last week the party was preparing a comprehensive programme of industrialization and modernization that can transform Ghana’s economy in a matter of a decade.
While a section of the public welcomed the claim, others questioned its viability.
The ruling NDC responded with an alternative policy named the “Coordinated Programme of Economic and Social Development Policies, 2010 – 2016: An Agenda for Shared Growth and Accelerated Development for a Better Ghana.
However, in a statement issued Monday and signed by the party’s Director of Communication William Dowokpor, the CPP said “it is a very serious indictment on the NDC that their vision 2020 document turned out to be a hoax; and on the NPP that their Vision 2015 was in response to a requirement for donor funding and not necessarily for the solemn obligation of transforming Ghana for the benefit of her citizens.”
It added that “by their 30 year combined record, it is accurate to conclude that transforming Ghana has never been truly contemplated by NDC/NPP. All they have done for the past generation is to seize political power through fair or foul means only to turn round and tell Ghanaians why the economy cannot be transformed, usually blaming each other for emptying the state coffers before leaving office.”
“Since when did NPP realise that Ghana’s economy is a “Guggisburg Economy” that needs transformation? Was it before or after their eight years in power?” the statement asked.
It also attacked the erstwhile Kufuor regime for its failed attempts to grow the economy using private sector, enumerating initiatives like the Special Initiatives on Starch, Oil Palm and Garments - when the party claims to believe in the private sector as the engine of growth.
“It can therefore not be accurate that the NPP/NDC can transform Ghana in ten and six years respectively when they have not been able to do so in 18 years.
“We wish to caution Ghanaians against this power hungry propaganda, which in many ways plagiarise CPP alternative policy visions, so presented at the 'How CPP Will Do It' series for the last seven months.”
The party emphasised that neither the NDC nor NPP deserve the mandate to govern Ghana again, stressing, they have no idea how to transform Ghana.
