One of the three aspirants vying for the NPP parliamentary seat in the Ayawaso Central constituency has accused the incumbent MP of endorsing one of the candidates. Vida Koranteng, the only female candidate in the race alleges that Sheik IC Quaye, former Greater Accra Minister is conniving with constituency executives to have one Henry Quartey replace him. The aggrieved aspirant told Joy News the conduct of both the MP and the constituency executives was unfortunate and ought to be condemned. She stressed the action was in violation of the party’s constitution which prevents constituency executives and party leaders from openly supporting a candidate during primaries. But Sheikh I.C. Quaye has defended his action. He said he went into deep consultation with all who matter within the party in the constituency before supporting Henry Quartey. “We have selected somebody who is going to take care of the constituency and I will pull everything under my power to support him to win,” he confirmed. He dismissed assertions that his support was an imposition on the constituency. Meanwhile, the Head of Communications of the NPP, Nana Akomea in reaction noted the MP may not necessarily be violating the rules of the party by openly supporting a candidate. He explained the MPs position does not fall under the category of party officials who have been banned from openly showing their bias ahead of the primaries. According to him, MPs are already involved in such elections, more so when majority contest the same positions. It would be difficult to tell them not to be bias, he noted. But for the sake of peace, he advised that MPs who will not contest their seat again ought to keep their preferences to themselves.
