Telecoms firm Airtel says its Freedom to dream promotion, which is the subject of a court case by the National Lottery Authority, is no different from similar promotions it has run in the past. Country Director of Airtel, Philip Sowah said news that the National Lottery Authority had initiated court action to halt a further running of the promotion therefore came as a surprise. Speaking to Joy News, Mr. Sowah said “we are not doing anything new, it is something we have been doing over the years so we are surprised that it is now causing this reaction.” He maintained that they have not changed the modus operandi of the promotion and that it was not necessary to seek any permission from the NLA. “Our lawyers have told us that what we’re doing is well within the law, but that said we also going to try to have discussions with the NLA and try and further understand exactly where and what their concerns are,” he added. The National Lottery Authority has gone to court seeking a perpetual injunction restraining Airtel from continuing to run its Freedom to Dream promotion. The NLA argues the promotion is being run without recourse to the country's laws. Reagan Twum Barimah, Public Affairs Officer at the NLA who spoke to Joy News said the suit filed against the telecoms firm is not designed to kill the drive of the firm to attract subscribers. Mr. Barimah says the Freedom to Dream promotion seizes to be one when premium charges apply: “It so happens that premium charges apply and as soon as premium charges apply then it seizes to become a promotion which now goes into the jurisdiction of the National Lotteries Authority.” He said they are praying the court to put a perpetual injunction on the Freedom to Dream promotion as well as all subsidiaries of Airtel from continuing with it.
