Governance expert Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey has criticized the mode of appointment and dismissal of government functionaries. In recent times some government functionaries have questioned how they were appointed or dismissed by the President. Most of them heard their appointments or dismissal in the media without any prior notice.Current Sports Minister Kofi Humado in an interview with Joy News earlier this year said he learnt about his appointment 15 minutes before the announcement was made on air.
In the past some appointees who were dismissed say they were unaware of their status until it was announced by the media.
But Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey who is also the Executive Director for the institute of democratic governance says this is not good enough. He wants the system to change to allow political appointees space to continue with their normal activities in other circles. He said the extent to which these appointments and dismissals are made public have become counter productive to the country’s development. To him the lack of security of jobs in these positions give rise to corruption allegations and that a better system of doing it should be introduced to limit the damage it does on the governance system.Source: Joy News/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
