A deputy Finance and Economic Minister says the days in which politicians made unrealistic promises for votes are long gone and the New Patriotic Party with its leader, Nana Addo must adjust to the dawn of reality.
Fifi Kwetey maintained Ghanaian electorates have become wiser and more vigilant and would not be swindled by high-falluting promises.
He was reacting to the 10-year development plan out-doored by the NPP leader after a workshop with party researchers.
Nana Addo posited it was possible to transform Ghana in 10 years by doing away with the import driven Guggisberg -economy and adopting structural industrial policies.
He said with the experience and successes of the BRIC nations- Brazil, Russia, India And Chin, Ghana can with “Dedication, Discipline and Determination” be the pride of Africa within 10 years.
His prescriptions have been battered by government spokespersons, with some referring to it as empty, visionless.
On Joy FM’s news analysis programme Newsfile on Saturday, the deputy Finance Minister Fifi Kwetey profiled the track record of Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP and was less than charitable in his conclusions.
He said twelve solid years as a Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South as well as a cabinet minister under the Kufuor led regime for eight years, Nana Addo and the NPP have woefully failed in achieving key economic and infrastructural targets necessary for the transformation of the country’s economy and have no basis making further promises.
Citing contents of the 2000 manifesto of the NPP, the deputy minister said the party promised to wipe out all slums in the country but never put up even a single housing unit.
He said the party promised to revive 600 agro-based industries in their eight year administration but did little or nothing at all in that regard.
He added the NPP promised to modernize and extend railway lines to the Northern Region but ended up collapsing the sector, turning GIA upside down and left the state of the country’s economy in 2008 in a state of intensive care.
With this track record Fifi Kwetey pronounced that Nana Addo and the NPP have no credibility to to be making promises, much less to seek political mandate.
“When you listen to the flagbearer of the NPP and you, as it were, cast your mind back to just not only the individual but also of the group he belongs to then you cannot help but to feel sad for Ghana because it is obvious Nana Addo and the NPP are not learning at all. They are just basically remaining with the mind set that somehow you can continue throwing some of these high-falluting stuff and some how you can deceive the people to want to give you their mandate,” he said.
The Communications Minister Haruna Iddrisu who was also on the show said the comments by the NPP flagbearer is nothing but a justification for the renewal of the mandate of President John Mills.
According to him, the comments clearly indicate that no government will be able to transform the economy in two years, saying if Nana Addo needs ten years to transform the country then President Mills deserves to be retained in power.
