Dr. Sekou Nkrumah has emphatically stated that he does not think President Mills will rein in his ministers who are using abusive language on their opponents because, to him, the president does not see anything wrong with such statements.
Dr. Nkrumah, a member of the NDC and an ardent critic of President Mills was contributing to discussions on the growing rate of insults in Ghana’s body politic on Joy FM’s current affairs programme Newsfile Saturday.
Dr. Nkrumah , son of Ghana’s first President Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, said President Mills will not crack the whip “because he doesn’t think that what they (his ministers) are saying is wrong.”
He said the president was merely trying to win some political favours when he admonished religious and political leaders to eschew insulting language.
There have been calls for President Mills to sanction his ministers who have verbally attacked their political opponents in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), but Dr. Nkrumah is of the view that his onetime boss will not be moved, insisting many officials on both sides think alike and share such mutual enmity.
“When I joined the NDC and I met former President Kufuor for the first time - I think it was like a joke - but he said you have gone to join some bad people,” insisting that such a statement reflects the mentality of both leaders on the political divide.
Even though he appreciates concerns raised about some level of irresponsible reportage by the media, he believes “the media has done very well,” warning that “in a sense we should be careful not to try to suppress or manipulate the media.”
He indicated that “it is important for us not to undermine the independence of the media but to encourage it than to try to manipulate or to suppress them again. I think we don’t need to go back.”
Dr. Nkrumah wants all stakeholders to learn to use “refined language” during any political discourse.
