Ghana’s former President, Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings has called on Ghanaians not to lose faith in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as there is hope on the horizon to clean up the party and the government and “bring in bold people who will do what must be done”. President Rawlings said: “Some of us have not changed and justice will be done and it is pretty much on the horizon. “We will have to clean up our own situation within the party and within the government if we want to survive for 2012, unless we don’t want to and we want to destroy ourselves. But no, we will not allow it.” Speaking during visits to chiefs and opinion leaders within the Tamale metropolis on Saturday, the former president did not mince words when he said he was disappointed at the Mills government for its inertia over the Ya Na investigation. President Rawlings said for a party that was borne out of the quest for freedom and justice, sending the Wuako report to the courts was an insult to the intelligence of Ghanaians. “In doing what we are doing we are destroying the government and destroying the party. The whole world was waiting for justice to be done when we come into office. Now they think we were lying all along that is why Kufuor can call him corrupt and me a liar because he [Mills] has not investigated the dirty corruption of the Kufuor regime. “I quite appreciate how enraged people were and the consequence of that anger. It came as no surprise to someone like me. But there again what came out of that court came as no surprise to me either because that’s what I expected. Because so long as that shoddy report is going to be the basis to go to court the result is what we get and I want to take this opportunity to actually let some of our brothers and sisters know that the anger should have happened much earlier when they were going to take that shoddy work to court. “But I guess most people did not quite understand it when I kept repeating and saying that a proper investigation that would have helped the truth should be done,” Flt Lt Rawlings said. President Rawlings visited the Gukpe Naa’s Palace where the Regent of Savelugu, Sulemana Mahama, met him. He also visited the Dakpema of Tamale, Naa Alhassan Dawuni, the Nyab Bugulana Abdul Rahman Alhassan, CPP Patriarch Lawyer Ibrahim Mahama, the Tamale Central Mosque and the Anbarriya Central School Complex where the premises was besieged by hundreds of excited youth and residents of Tamale eager to catch a glimpse of the former President and listen to what he had to say. The former President said: “Let us roll our minds back when that dastardly act took place. Had true, proper justice been done, had government exhibited the appropriate vigilance and done a proper investigation I don’t think this place would have been under a state of emergency for two whole years…two whole years. “Had justice been done there would not have been the need for it [curfew] for that long. And I think we should all have recognised that something is seriously wrong with what took place and I just feel very sad that we seem to be just leaving the status quo the way Kufuor left things and we are not tackling some of these things as vigilantly as we should be doing. “The whole country is with you here and sympathises very much and for me if we do not get to the bottom of this thing I just don’t see how we can take away the stress on ourselves, on our souls on our hearts. I am not here supporting one family against another. This is a clear criminal act. It’s pretty much like what they did to Molbilla and they’ve just gone and arrested two corporals, two subordinates. If a proper questioning had been done we will find out, which officer gave those orders and which civilian politician ordered the officer. “Is it that we are afraid to see where this thing is going to reach so that we only make the small people the victims, you know the pawns? It’s not right. And I hope now everybody understands what I keep talking about. The need to investigate the thing properly and to unearth the truth, because what Kufuor’s government did was designed to conceal the proper truth and those who were involved or masterminded this thing…we are not talking about stealing…that they’ve done and gotten away with…so it seems. “But should we get away with taking human life so cheaply, so easily and a King at that and his elders? The world is aware of this thing and I feel very sad that heads of state in other places were long aware of the Ya Na’s situation that took place in the Kufuor time. It has been a serious indictment hanging on his government. So it is not as if this thing is known only in Ghana. It’s known way outside. Just as they did…politicised the judges issue but we made sure that that justice was done. Why can’t we make sure that justice is done with the Ya Na’s death?” President Rawlings asked.
