The Ghana Police Service has assured that it will not let Ghanaians down during the general elections in 2012, promising to protect the citizenry as well as ballot boxes.
The Police Administration has always ensured the safety of Ghanaians, especially during crucial events like sporting activities and even elections, Acting Public Relations Officer of the Service DSP Cephas Arthur has said and emphasized that election 2012 will be no exception.
Many have raised red flags about the ability of the Police to provide the needed protection for citizens and cause the arrest of unruly individuals who engage in violent acts when there is misunderstanding during elections.
The Police have not made any arrest yet in connection with violent acts that characterized various bye-elections in Chaperoni, Akwatia and other places last year.
They are yet to arrest any of the rancorous youths in Tamale who burnt some offices of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following the release of 15 people suspected to have murdered the overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Yakubu Andani II.
But speaking on Peace FM’s midday news Monday, DSP Arthur explained that the fact that nobody has been arrested does not necessarily mean the Police is doing nothing about the cases.
He said some investigations were ongoing and that at the right time the public would be duly informed about the outcome of the investigations.
“The wheels of justice grinds slowly but gets to its destination,” DSP Cephas Arthur said, insisting that the judicial system needs time in order to conduct proper investigations into cases.
He concluded that the Ghana Police Service is internationally recognized for protecting the will of Ghanaians during elections, and assured that ballot boxes would be safe in the hands of the Police come 2012.
