The Sekyere West District Assembly in Ashanti has decided not to start any new development project for the rest of the year until all on-going projects are completed. The decision was taken at a two-day ordinary session of the Assembly at Mampong on Thursday, after some of the assembly members had expressed grave concern about the continued delays and abandonment of some on-going projects initiated by the Assembly. They mentioned the bitumen surfacing of the Mampong-Kofiase, Nsuta-Oyoko, Mampong-Nsuta, Mprim Junction-Jamasi and Beposo-Wioso roads, the District Assembly Hall at Mampong, which ought to have been completed in 2006 and the laying of pipe-lines at Nsuta and Beposo water project as some of the abandoned projects. The assembly members called for the necessary assistance to the contractors working on these projects to return to site. They, however, called for sanctions against recalcitrant contractors. They noted with concern hooliganism among the youth during funeral celebrations, which took the form of blocking the roads, excessive drinking of alcohol, rioting, destruction of properties and dangerous driving. The assembly members called for concerted efforts by members, unit committees and traditional rulers to team up to regulate funeral celebrations in their communities and for family members to obtain permits from the police before organizing funerals. The assembly members appealed to the Police Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU) to check over-loading of passengers by taxi drivers on the Mampong-Kofiase, Beposo-Nsuta and Nsuta-Deduako roads.Source: GNA
