A member of the defunct Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), Osahene Major (Rtd) Boakye Djan has stated that former President Rawlings is bent on destroying the Mills-led administration because of fears that President Mills may support attempts to prosecute him for his role in the 31 December 1981 coup.Maj. Boakye Djan, an ally of the former president during the 1979 coup that ousted the military regime of Generals Acheampong and Akuffo, fell out with him after Mr. Rawlings led a coup against the democratically elected government of Dr. Hilla Limann two years later.Maj. Boakye Djan who was speaking to Citi FM Monday believes the Rawlingses are eager to take over the reins of government because they feel insecure under the leadership of President Mills.Mr. Rawlings has publicly declared that he will not support the candidature of President Mills should he be elected by the party for the 2012 General Elections.His wife, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings has also stated that she is nursing the ambition to challenge President Mills at the party’s presidential primaries slated for June 8, 9, and 10, 2011.But to Maj. Boakye Djan, this antagonism from the Rawlingses towards President Mills is a cover up.“Mills is the only President in contemporary Ghana who can never be tainted with anti-constitution coup or illegal coup so if it becomes necessary for people to call Mr. Rawlings to account, my forecast is that Mills could do nothing to stop it…Ideologically they belong to different camps, historically they have emerged from different backgrounds- politically – and these are not things that mix easily,” he posited.He said Mr Rawlings’ primary motivation is to cover his “illegal past which President Mills cannot be counted on to support; that I believe is the underlying cause of the rift.”He said perpetrators of the 1966 and 1972 coups have all been held accountable for their roles in destabilizing the country’s political history by the AFRC of which Mr. Rawlings was a leading member.He therefore questioned why Mr. Rawlings will use the indemnity clause in the constitution to protect himself.Story by Derick Romeo Adogla/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
