The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Anthony Karbo has criticized leaders and members of the Coalition of Africans Against Foreign Intervention (CAAFI). He said the agitations by the group are misplaced and unwarranted. The group led by Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt hit the streets on Tuesday in protest of what they claimed was attempts at re-colonising the African continent by the West. They cited the invasion of Libya by NATO forces in an attempt to oust the Libyan leader Muamar Gaddafi as well as French invasion of Ivory Coast to end the stand-off between Laurent Gbagbo and Alassane Ouattara. But in an interview with Joy News, Anthony Karbo accused Kwesi Pratt and the group of hypocrisy and double standards. According to him, African leaders have depended largely on the same Western countries for Foreign Direct Investment for development and wondered why anybody will now accuse them (West) of interfering in local affairs. He said once these Western countries have a stake in our development projects they do have an equal say in the political development of our countries. He wondered how Mr Pratt will on one hand support the STX project in Ghana- a project he says is clearly a FDI and turn around and say the Coalition of Africans Against Foreign Intervention (CAAFI) will resist foreign intervention and influence. “Why do we want to ask for the Western money to develop our country yet still we say we don’t want them to interfere in the governance issues and the issues that have to do with the will of the people,” he said. He said the debacle in the Ivory Coast has little to do with foreign interference and everything to do with Gbagbo’s intransigence and explained that if Gbagbo had handed over none of what is happening today would have happened. “Why is it that the same group did not demonstrate when the UN had given Gbagbo protection for a period of five years until this point?” he quizzed. He said the UN has played a more crucial role in stabilizing the Western neighbour than the disruptive role being attributed to it by Kwesi Pratt’s group. Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
