Agitations for the removal of the General Manager of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) reached another level when workers took turns to lash out at their General Manager at a durbar in front of the Minister of Information.The Minister, John Akologu Tia and his Deputy, Baba Jamal held a durbar with the management, board and staff of the Agency, which was attended by the General Manager, Nana Appau Duah where workers were allowed to express their grievances as the GM sat and listened.Deputy General Secretary of the Communication Workers Union at GNA, Mr. Lawrence Quartey told Adom News at some point the GM attempted to interrupt a worker but the minister prevented him from doing so and asked him to allow the workers to have their say.“People spoke of how the GM has run down the agency over the past four years and allowed the roofs to leak and for rats to infest the Agency,” he said.He said a female editor who had worked with the agency under previous GMs for close to 20 years broke into tears whilst narrating how the GM has mismanaged the legacy of previous managers.“Everything people said indicate that Nana Appau Duah has been the worst performing General Manager (GM) in the history of the Agency,” Mr. Quartey said.Mr. Quartey noted that Nana Appau Duah has reached his retirement age but he has two more years to go on his contract with the National Media Commission.“But we are insisting that his contract can only go beyond the retirement age based on merit – and Nana Appau Duah has not showed that he merits leading GNA for two more years.“For four years, the only achievements of the GM has been tiling the premises of the agency and erecting a canopy at the car park,” he said.In an interview with Deputy Information Minister, Baba Jamal, he admitted that the workers had serious issues but assured that the Board of GNA and the Ministry would find solutions to the problems.Baba Jamal noted that it is the National Media Commission that appoints the manager of the Agency and as such government will not interfere in their work, but would work closely with the Board and NMC to find amicable solutions to the growing tension between the workers and the General Manager.Story by Akua Akuamoah/Adom News/Ghana
