The NDC Parliamentary candidate for Nsuta-Kwamang in the 2008 elections wants the executives of the party to impress on the former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings to rescind her decision to contest Prez Mills at the party’s upcoming primaries. Donkor Fuseini says it would be suicidal and out of order to allow the wife of the party founder, Jerry John Rawlings to contest the sitting president and leader of the NDC whom they all campaigned for in the 2008 elections. He said the executives should be held liable if the party performs poorly in the 2012 elections should Nana Konadu contest Professor Mills. According to Mr. Donkor, though the NDC is founded on democratic ideals, that alone is not enough to win the party power in 2012. He says allowing the former First Lady to contest the sitting President could be a recipe for disaster, adding that it will create acrimony and division among party supporters. It will also mean the NDC will split into two - Rawlings and Mills camps - a situation he says should be avoided. "We have our founder, who is the heartbeat of the party and if you have the wife of the founder himself coming to contest the sitting president who is the leader of the party, it means there is something wrong with the executives," he said. Mr. Donkor believes the earlier the executives embarked on this exercise the better for the NDC. "Even the mere fact that she (Nana Konadu) picks a form is an indictment on the national executives. It means they are not doing their work well." Though he admits it is not wrong for anybody to contest the president, he sees it unthinkable for the former First Lady to contest the sitting president she campaigned for in 2008 elections. "I believe that it is not wrong for anybody from anywhere to contest the President but for Nana Konadu to go and pick a form against the sitting President is totally wrong and it doesn’t help the cause of the NDC," he explained. Political Science lecturer at the KNUST, Akwasi Amakye-Boateng however agrees with the call but warned it must be tackled tactically. "It should be taken out of the public realm because of its delicate nature and handled diplomatically because people are aware of the sensitive nature of the issue they are relating to so that they employ all caution." He says there is nothing wrong working on it on the quiet. "There is nothing wrong in working on the quiet to really get President Mills come out as the party’s candidate uncontested in any way." Mr. Amakye-Boateng cautioned the NDC against the development, saying any move to contest or change Professor Mills as its presidential candidate for 2012 elections could spell doom for the party. "The moment the party really comes out with at least one more person contesting to become the party’s flagbearer in 2012 elections, to us it passes a vote of no confidence in the president, period… The president’s competence has been called into question and definitely the people of Ghana will take notice of that" he explained.
