The Eastern Regional branch of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) have appealed to the former first lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings to rescind her decision to challenge President Mills in the party’s primaries scheduled for 8 to 10 July, 2011 in Sunyani.
According to them, it will be an indictment on the NDC if Mrs. Rawlings contests President Mills and could spell doom for the party in Election 2012.
Mrs. Rawlings on Wednesday April 13, 2011, resigned her position as the 1st Vice Chairman of the party, stating the decision was to "enable me respond to numerous calls on me to contest the flagbearership of the NDC when nominations are opened."
But the Eastern Regional Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Julius Debra who chaired the meeting believes her action could send the party back into opposition.
Mr. Debra on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday said it will be unwise for party delegates to change President Mills who has already been marketed over the years.
Mr. Julius Debrah who is also the Chief Executive of the Ghana Tourist Board stressed the need to give the President a second chance to continue with his developmental project to complete the Better Ghana Agenda.
He observed that, even though the leadership of the party in some regions have thrown their weight behind President Mills, the Eastern Regional branch deem it important to appeal to Mrs. Rawlings not to pick the nomination forms to challenge President Mills.
