The West African Gas Pipeline should have high pressure gas flowing through it constantly from July this year.
This should make natural gas from Nigeria available in high volumes to bulk consumers in Ghana and others in the sub-region.
The Volta River Authority, a key stakeholder in the pipeline is hoping to use the gas to produce cheaper electricity.
It currently receives limited amounts through the pipeline which is passed on to the Sunon Asogli Power Plant, an independent power producer.
Operators of the pipeline say they expect supplies to reach 1.3 million cubic feet daily by July.
Though this represents only a third of the pipeline’s capacity, WAGPO Managing Director Charles Adeniji has told Joy Business it is still significant.
He believes the gas would be used for productive economic activities.
Mr. Adeniji added that the company had put in place measures to prevent any supply disruptions.
The West African Gas Pipeline Company is a Joint venture between public and private sector companies from Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Ghana.
It mainly transports gas from Nigeria to other regions in West Africa, including Ghana which is said to be the biggest consumer of the gas.
